Struggling Soltilo Angkor sack coach. Solito Angkor FC the second best team in Siem Reap have sacked English coach Darren “Charlie” Pomroy less than a year after he was re-hired by the club.
“Soltilo Angkor FC has decided to walk separate ways with head coach Charlie. We appreciate all your words of encouragement and everything we have learned from you and we wish you success wherever you go,” the club announced via a cryptic post on its social media.
According to his LinkedIn profile the highlight of his career was being Football Development officer at Stevenage Borough in England, before coming to Cambodia and founding Next Step FC a youth football coaching program based in Siem Reap. He was given his first professional coaching gig at Soltilo Angkor FC in 2018. After two lowly finishes he left the club, before being rehired in December of 2020 in hopes of rejuvenating the team. Alas after losing their first games they sit squarely at the bottom of the C-League and among the favorites to be relegated this season.
Despite this it would seem that Mr Pomroy did not see the sacking coming.
Judging by his press release reported by Khmer Times it would seem he did not take it very well at all, stating;
“To Soltilo Angkor. Twice in my career you have tried to strangle the life out of me. You will never succeed in doing so. You claim to develop football in Cambodia yet you have no real idea of what development is. I have watched you lie, bully and disrespect Khmer and African players and when I stood up to you or called you out, you threatened my job and then finally took it. Your treatment of pro football players, staff and people is abysmal. Cambodian football stands no chance if you are the flagship developing it. Thank God you’re not,
Ouch – one can only assume that after these sentiments he will not be hired for a third spell at the club, but hey who knows, football as they say indeed a funny old game.
The club have yet to announce their new coach, and recently had their first game since the restart the season postponed after a player tested positive for Covid-19. Whoever they do hire though will certainly face an uphill challenge in trying to salvage anything from the current season.
