OpTic Texas reverse sweep bitter rivals Atlanta FaZe to take top spot going into Major 2 tournament: Call of Duty MW2

After a controversial month for OpTic Texas following several questionable roster moves by the eSports org, OpTic beat FaZe in a thrilling match on Sunday – the last day of Major 2 qualifiers ¬– to secure their finish at the top of the leaderboards and start the tournament bracket in the most preferable position.

The placement looked highly unlikely after they lost to 11th place Vegas Legion, previously known as Paris Legion, on Saturday and then were one 2-0 down of the best-of-5 match with Faze on Sunday. However, the Green boys pulled it back and put themselves in pole position to win Major 2, which will be hosted by Boston Breach, starting next weekend.

The weekend’s action

Seattle Surge – who came second in Major 1 – finish in the losers bracket, meaning if they lose just one came they’ll be going home from the tournament. We break all these games down below in the run-up to Major 2!

The final weekend of Major 2 qualifiers began on Friday and FaZe fans might have started to worry then as their team started the game 2-0 down to a struggling Los Angeles Guerillas (LAG), before taking them to a round 5 to win the game.

Major 1 winners New York Subliners (NYSL) blow away bottom two league Vegas Legion in a comfortable 3-0, while the other team at the bottom, the London Royal Ravens, did put up a fight against the Florida Mutineers, but the latter were always favorites and took the game 3-2.

On Saturday, Toronto Ultra showed FaZe how it was done, beating comfortably 3-1 with marmite Ultra player Scrappy continuing to divide the fans. The Ultra man was seen holding his finger up to the LAG players through the camera after the result, a week after shooting Shottzys body after winning a one-on-one with the OpTic SMG, only to go on to lose the match.

However, the real upsets on the day came with league leaders NYSL and OpTic, who both lost 3-1 to Seattle Surge & Vegas Legion respectively, putting major doubts on OpTics’ final finishing place in Major 2.

Saturday rounded off with Boston finishing off a Mutineers to send them into a lower bracket finish in the tournament.

However, Sunday had all the drama. Aside from OpTic reverse sweeping FaZe, Minnesota Rokker – one of the most unpredictable teams in the game – beat Surge meaning they start in the losers bracket in Major 2. This comes after Surge failed negotiations to sell star player Pred during the OpTic roster mania over the last couple of weeks, which have seemingly had a very negative impact on what was previously a top 2 squad.

Boston Breach also took Los Angeles Thieves (LAT) the distance, going up 2-0, with star player Nero going 16-8 in the final map. However, the ‘anti-ice’ team as they are being called couldn’t overcome LAT and when it went to a final map they continued their game 5 losing streak for the loss.

Major 2 schedule

The second Major of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 season will start on February second, with some spicy winners bracket matchups, including Ultra versus LAG and OpTic versus LAT, with the latter match up seeing famous former OpTic player and now LAT owner Nadeshot takes his team up against the Green Wall.

Friday will then see those winners bracket losers face off against loser bracket teams which included London, Florida, Legion, and Surge, with however facing the latter arguably in for the biggest challenge given the surprise in seeing them finish so low.

Play-offs will then go ahead on Saturday before a final elimination round 4, elimination final, and the winners final will decide who takes home the Major 2 trophy!
