Phnom Penh Crown Win 2022 Cambodian Premier League

Phnom Penh Crown football club have won the Cambodian Premier League (CPL) title for the second straight year, as early season title favorite Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng got blown out ‘spectacularly’ in the controversial final championship round of the 2022 Season

With the team merely needing a win against Boeung Ket FC, they instead saw the match off in spectacular fashion with Afgan striker Fareed Sadat netting a brace, as he led Phnom Penh Crown FC to a resounding 5-0 victory.

The win gave Crown a second consecutive title having won the previous seasons C-League, before the introduction of the Cambodian Premier League this year.

The won will be seen as bitter sweet for the Phnom Penh club, who lost their Chairman Rithy Smnang”earlier this year.

Ogawa’s goal in the 16th minute set the tone early on, with Phnom Penh Crown FC catching their hapless opponents flat-footed. Sadat scored two minutes later to double the Phnom Penh Crown FC lead. Their lead ballooned to 3-0 going into half-time when Pisoth snugk a nice shot over the Boeung Ket goalkeeper.

Going into the second- half Sadat scored his second goal in the 67th minute, before Hyrshyn barrelled in a game-sealing goal in the 86th minute.

The marvellous end to the season was an unexpected recovery of sorts for Phnom Penh Crown FC, who did not register a single win until the sixth week of the 2022 Season and for a time at least looked like they might even have a relegation fight on their hands.

Visakha 1 Preach Khan Svay Rieng FC 0

Yet while the tale of Crown was of a late season resurgence the opposite could be said for favourites Svay Rieng.

Entering the finale KR Svay Rieng FC had a dramatic collapse in the championship round after leading the league for most of the season by double digits, winning only once in the six matches of the final round, which culminated in a 1-0 loss to Visakha FC today.

Entering the match Crown, PK Svay Rieng and Visakha were all on 49 points, meaning it could have been anyones, but in the end the early pacesetters will have to settle for second place, behind Cup Winners Visakha.

And while one might argue about the fairness, or wisdom of the Championship round, results are results and the 2022 champions are Phnom Penh Crown.
