Smart partners with Mobile Legends creator Monotone to launch Cambodian esports league

Cambodian esports league to be launched after major new partnership announced. Smart Cambodia have partnered with Mobile Legends creator Monotone to launch esports league in great news for professional gamers in the Kingdom, according to a report from Telecompaper, a site that specializes in news from the Telecoms sector.

What’s the news for gamers?

Smart Axiata one of the most popular cellphone networks in Cambodia have signed a partnership agreement with Moonton, the creator of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) to create the the first-ever esports league in Cambodia. The tournament to be known as the MLBB Professional League (MPL), will allow local teams to play against the best teams in international leagues and tournaments.

Even more excitingly for local gamers there will be the $30,000 prize pot to be won in the league according to a spokesperson from Smart Axiata.

WTF is E-sports?

If you’ve gotten this far without knowing this instead of switching off then kudos to you! Quite simply e-sports, or esports is people playing computer games/video games professionally.

Esports are huge internationally with some tournaments offering prize money into the millions, not to mention the many people who have become YouTube stars literally by letting people watch them game. In 2021 the industry is estimated to be valued at over $1 billion according to the Statista website.

What is the setup of the league?

With the support from Smart the league will run two seasons over the next year, with the first season to run from August to October of 2021.

Cambodian teams will compete for cash prizes, as well as the chance to represent Cambodia at the M3 international tournament at the end of the year.  According to Smart, team registration will open soon, and all league matches will be live-streamed on the MLBB Facebook page, Leng by Smart Facebook page as well as Smart Axiata’s YouTube channel. With the hope being that this media exposure will pique the interest of gamers in the country.

How to take part in the Cambodian esports league

Those interested in participating in the upcoming league season can get unlimited data to play the game by subscribing to Smart’s newly launched Mobile Legends Unlimited service for 20 cents a week. For in-game purchases, they are also offering a 50 percent bonus on Razer Gold via the Razer Gold website if currency is purchased with their Smart balance.
